Jogja Contemporary Artist

ASRI (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia) was established in 1950 in Yogyakarta after the Independence of Indonesia. Under the leadership of Mr. Katamsi, he successfully gained the support of established Indonesian Modern artists, like: Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, Sudjojono to mentor the pioneering students, like: Widayat, Saptohudoyo, Abas Alibasyah, Sutopo, Edhi Sunarso and Amri Yahya. These artists have learnt and developed various techniques from expressionism, figurative, abstract and impressionism, yet, their artworks have been characterised with the ability to tell stories.

In 1984, ASRI amalgamated with 2 other academies to become ISI (Institut Seni Indonesia). They started to develop a contemporary flavor capitalizing on their strengths. The artists explored issues that were microcosmic of the society including social, political, gender and spirituality.

Particularly on this area, Art:1 New Museum recognizes the significant contribution of the Jogja Artists such as: Budi Ubrux, Entang Wiharso, Heri Dono and Nasirun. This generation of artists bridge the Indonesian modern art from their predecessors to the next generation of contemporary artists, such as: Indieguerillas, Julnaidi, Made W. Valasara and Yudi Sulistyo. Their works have consistently been able to depict and represent their generations’ society’s prevalent issues.
