Generations of Bandung Fine Artists

Educational institutions have always posed a major influence towards the advancement of fine art. One of the most prominent examples of this progression are the painters from Bandung Institution of Technology in the 1950s up to today.

Each work was informed by the artists’ individual responses towards the social, political, and cultural issues of the everchanging lapse of time. Most of the modern ideas depicted throughout their work were influenced by literature studies and academical syllabus, along with societal contentions and affairs that took place during their time as a student, informing their work with a sophisticated relevance.

Until today, Bandung’s contribution to fine art remains a significant axis for the fine art landscape in Indonesia, where its progression is depicted through significant works from each generation. The vital similarity, however, is the portrayal of conceptual ideas that is seen through a strong technical process, which is one of the pillars of conventional image making.

The progression of Bandung painters can be seen from the works of Sadali, But Mochtar, Sunaryo, Popo Iskandar, Dikdik Sayahdikumullah, Ay Tjoe Christine, Prilla Tania and many others.
