Solo Exhibition by Vanessa Van Houten
For over a year Vanessa Van Houten has been working on a new body of work in her second book called
Here*Now, a photography portrait series about inner beauty of Indonesians. In a time where many talk about diversity and difference, she was keen to examine what binds us together. Inside her simple studio in Jakarta, she photographed over 50 Indonesians – women, men, warias (cross-dressers, transsexuals and transgenders) aged between 20 and 80 years old, which are passionate chefs and baristas, young entrepreneurs, accomplished athletes, mothers, fathers, loved social influencers, dancers, beautiful yogis, makeup artists, sex workers, famous musicians, popular artists and talented fashion designers. Each person she photographed twice; once in their favourite clothes and once almost bare in a white cloth which was made especially for this project, by Chitra Subyakto, the creative soul of Indonesian fashion and textile house Sejauh Mata Memandang. These sessions and the photographs, that resulted provide a glimpse into the lives of the people we are surrounded by. In the book Here*Now 39 people are chosen: featuring Ananda Sukarlan, Kaka Slank, Ridho Slank, Ivanka Slank, Jay Subiyakto, Tri Handoko, Reti Ragil, Poppy Sovia, Rama Dauhan, Alexander Siregar, Sari Kusumaningrum, Triyaningsih and Ayla Dimitri.
Curated by Oscar Motuloh and Jay Subiyakto, the exhibition FREE FALL is a combination series of photography exhibition from the previous series RAW (that was previously shown at Goethe Institut Jakarta), the new series Here*Now, a video installation and a series of workshop.
